Spicy lemonade recipe
I’m a huge fan of spicy drinks like this spicy lemonade recipe. I love how they’re super refreshing but also leave you with a little lingering heat to balance the sweetness and leave you reaching for another drink.
I typically drink spicy cocktails like mango habanero margaritas, spicy mango moscow mules and spicy watermelon margaritas that are made with chili pepper infused syrup or spirits.
But spicy drinks without alcohol are excellent too! They have a nice nuanced flavor that makes them perfect to serve as mocktails. Or they’re just great for spring and summer picnics and parties like Mother’s Day and Cinco de Mayo.
This spicy lemonade recipe skips the fussy syrups and infusions and instead is made in minutes in a blender. The most difficult part is simply waiting for the pulp to strain. But you can choose to skip that part and make it even faster instead by serving it as spicy strawberry lemonade with pulp.
Alternately, if you’d prefer to make strawberry lemonade without a blender simply combine unsweetened lemonade with strawberry simple syrup that has been made with chili pepper slices tossed in while steeping.
Ingredients
- Lemons
- Strawberries – ripe, or overripe fresh strawberries are great for this recipe. Or you can use frozen berries as well if you have a high powered blender that is strong enough to blend them up. You can also make spicy mango lemonade, spicy pineapple lemonade, spicy blackberry lemonade or spicy lemonade with any fruit you’d like!
- Chili pepper – jalapeno pepper, serrano peppers, habanero pepper, whichever chili pepper you’d like! For this recipe I used a red fresno chili which is just slightly spicier than a jalapeno. I also used a smaller thai chili pepper as garnish. Anaheim peppers, shishito or poblano peppers should be avoided because they are typically very mild and will add more pepper flavor than heat.
- Sugar – granulated sugar or substitute with honey or your favorite sweetener of choice.
- Water
Step by step instructions
- Prep ingredients by peeling lemons and washing and removing the stem from strawberries.
- Add all ingredients except water to blender and pulse to combine. Add water and blend smooth.
- Place a fine mesh sieve over a large pitcher or bowl and pour strawberry lemonade through the sieve to remove the pulp. Stirring to speed up the process.
- Pour over ice.
- Serve and enjoy!
How to serve
Serve spicy lemonade as is or garnish the glass with chili peppers, strawberries or lemon to give a hint to what’s inside. You can also stir a couple sliced of chili peppers in the glass, but beware this will add quite a bit of extra heat.
Add tequila or vodka to make a spicy strawberry lemonade cocktail. Or top with sparkling water to make a bubbly spicy strawberry drink.
Yield
This recipe yields approximately 1 litre, 35 ounces, or about 4 ½ cups of strawberry lemonade. Roughly enough for 6 glasses of lemonade.
But the serving size is easily adjusted in the recipe card below.
How to store
Because of the fresh strawberries this lemonade is best served fresh. But it can be stored refrigerated for up to 3 days.
