What is simple syrup?

Classic simple syrup is a saturated solution of only sugar and water. Also called bar syrup, commonly used in cocktails, is one to one ratio of sugar to water.

Ingredients

  • Raspberries – fresh or frozen. If substituting frozen berries reduce the amount of water slightly.
  • Granulated sugar – or you can substitute organic cane sugar or brown sugar for the white sugar in simple syrup for richer flavor and color.

Step by step instructions

  1. Simmer fresh berries, and equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan until berries are soft.
  2. Strain to remove solids. Cool.

How to use

Simple syrup is commonly used for cocktails and is also drizzled over cakes before frosting. You can even use raspberry simple syrup for coffee as a delicious flavorful sweetener for coffee and tea, both hot and iced.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh raspberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a small saucepan bring all ingredients to a simmer.
    1 cup fresh raspberries, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 cup water
  • Simmer until sugar is dissolved, berries are soft and juices have been released, about 5 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and let steep while cooling slightly.
  • Then pour through fine mesh strainer into a jar or syrup dispenser.
  • Cool to room temperature.
  • Store refrigerated and use within 7 days.
