Tajin on watermelon and other fruits is not a new flavor combination. Watermelon sticks and other ornately cut fresh fruit like pineapple and mango served on sticks is a common street food in Mexico. Dipped in a either a homemade salt, lime zest and chili powder mix or the similar flavored Tajin seasoning, the flavors are simple but perfect.
Similarly flavored are Mexican fruit cups or ‘vasos de fruta’. Often made with a mixture of jicama, cucumber, mango, pineapple, and watermelon and served drizzled with sweet-tart Chamoy and a sprinkle of Tajin.
This fruit salad recipe makes it so easy to serve a crowd. It’s refreshing, simple and customizable. Fruit salads are perfect for outdoor parties and events and this one is an updated fruit salad recipe that everyone will love.
Ingredients
- Pineapple
- Watermelon
- English cucumbers (seedless with thin skin)
- Jicama – jicama is a Mexican tuberous root with amazing crunchy texture but not a lot of flavor. Many grocery stores carry jicama in the produce section but if you can not find where to buy jicama you can omit.
- Mangos
- Limes
- Chamoy sauce – Chamoy is a sweet, spicy tart Mexican condiment made from some combination of dehydrated fruit, chili powder, salt and citrus.
- Tajin seasoning – Similar to chamoy Tajin is a seasoning made of chili powder, salt and citrus. Or substitute a homemade Tajin mix made from lime zest, salt, chili powder and a little sugar.
Step by step instructions
- Peel fruit and vegetables so that they’re easy to eat. Then cut fruit into large spears.
- Squeeze fresh lime juice over top.
- Stand up fruit spears in disposable plastic cups, place on a large platter, or toss together in a large bowl.
- Season with Tajin and drizzle with Chamoy sauce either before or after serving.
