Hot cocktail recipe
This warm comforting cocktail is perfect served on chilly nights. And it makes a perfect festive cocktail for the holidays.
Similar to a chai hot toddy or Tom and Jerry cocktail this drink is served piping hot. It warms the body and spirit at the same time. Yes, it’s a delicious hot cocktail but it also works great as a sore throat tea, with a kick!
The ingredients are pretty standard for this classic warm cocktail recipe. It’s simply a mix of warm water, hot buttered rum batter and spiced rum. The batter is simply a spiced chai compound butter made from sugar, butter and spices. Although it can be eaten off a spoon the batter or mix is not meant to be eaten alone. And instead is typically served with rum and hot water as a delicious winter cocktail.
Ingredients
- Rum – the best rum for hot buttered rum is whatever variety you have on hand – light, dark or spiced! Of course, if you’re looking to buy a rum specifically for this rum cocktail a dark or spiced rum, like Captain Morgans, adds a great depth of flavor to this and other winter cocktails. You can also use substitute a different spirit like cinnamon, vanilla or butterscotch whiskey or vodka.
- Hot buttered rum batter – hot buttered rum mix is not alcoholic and is a spicy compound butter or mix of butter, brown sugar (dark or light) and spices. When added to hot liquid the butter smoothly melts into a luscious creamy drink.
- Hot liquid – hot water is the base to hot buttered rums. But you can use any hot liquid you have to mix up this warm cocktail! Try the mix combined with apple cider, hot chai tea (or other tea), warm oat milk (or other dairy or dairy free milk), and even red wine.
- Optional – vanilla ice cream or whipped cream and cinnamon or nutmeg for topping the finished cocktail.

How to serve
Serve Creamy Chai Hot Buttered Rum Cocktails topped with ice cream. Or make hot buttered rum without ice cream and top with a dollop of whipped cream instead.
Or make a virgin hot buttered rum recipe by stirring the mix into steaming apple cider.
You can even use hot buttered rum mix as a filling for cinnamon buns. Or as a premade holiday gift idea!
Yield
This recipe makes roughly 3 cups, or 24 ounces, or 48 tablespoons of batter. Enough to mix 24 servings of 2 tablespoons each.
If using this recipe as a holiday gift idea it will make roughly 4 small 6 ounce jars.
2 tablespoons may seem like a lot of the buttery batter, but it does not equal 2 tablespoons of straight butter. As the butter is whipped it increases in volume and 1 cup of butter becomes roughly 2 cups of whipped butter.
Single serving recipe
One of the best things about this cold weather cocktail recipe is the long shelf life of the batter. It’s so easy to always have some on hand to whip up a single serving cocktail or a cocktail for a crowd! The cocktail ratio is always this same – 1 part mix, 2 parts rum, 6 parts hot water.
To mix a single serving hot buttered rum simply adjust the serving size in the recipe below. Or use 1 ounce mix, 2 ounces rum and 6 ounces hot water. Or 2 tablespoons mix, ¼ cup rum and ¾ cup hot water.
To make 8 servings of hot buttered rum in the crockpot use 1 cup mix, 2 cups alcohol and 6 cups water.
How to store
