How to Clean and Refresh your Home before Fall
Cleaning in the summer may seem bothersome when you could be soaking up the last of the sun kayaking, hiking or swimming. But trust me, taking a little time now to clean and refresh your home will make cozying down in the cooler temps even better. All you need is a sunny day, a plan, and homemade Lavender Laundry Spray.
Capture the Freshness of Summer and Bring it Indoors
Living in an area with extreme seasons there’s always an end-of-season push to get it all done while you can. In the summer the looming rain and darkness is a reminder that sunny mornings, long days and laundry-lines are quickly coming to an end. Urging us to clean and organize and do everything outside while we can.
So, every year when the impending fall fever hits I do everything to clean and organize outside and to capture the freshness of line dried linens and bring it indoors!
end-of-summer refresh routine:
- Clear out clothing and linen closets. Separate everything into keep, donate and sell piles. Remove items to be donated.
- Take down curtains and shower curtains.
- Remove covers from pillows.
- Remove area rugs and throw rugs.
- Launder machine washable items like clothing, curtains, throw blankets and throw rugs as directed. Hang dry.
- Spray non-machine washable items like area rugs, pillows, down comforters, and even mattresses with Honey Lavender Laundry Spray, rub in and allow to air dry. Then vacuum or wipe down with a damp cloth and air dry again.
- Bring everything indoors and enjoy the freshness into fall!
Even in the smallest of spaces it’s usually possible to find a spot to hang a retractable laundry line. In a pinch string up a rope, use a folding laundry rack or place a ladder up between a couple tables. Air drying with the sun efficiently whitens whites while also being safe on colors and gentle wash items. Use what you have to take advantage of the unbeatable cleaning power of the sun!
How to Make Fresh & Bright Lavender Laundry Spray
When machine washing is not an option use this easy (3 ingredient!) odor removing, brightening spray to refresh carpets, mattresses, rugs, curtains and other large items. Try it with dish soap or liquid castile soap!
All you need are a few common household ingredients and a glass spray bottle.
tip: save any glass bottles with screw on lids and save your spray tips to always have a glass spray bottle on hand when you need it.
In a medium bowl measure liquid soap and hydrogen peroxide.
Add baking soda and whisk to dissolve.
Add cold water and pour into spray bottle. Use as directed.
Make it a paste for tougher jobs, like the ones that puppies and potty-training-kiddos leave behind. Simply omit the water and double the baking soda then apply paste directly and rub in then continue as directed by air drying and vacuuming/wiping clean.
